Home septic systems use a tank, organic bacteria and ground soil to filter waste water and return it to the ecosystem. The soil acts as the final filter, cleaning pathogens and bacteria and returning water to the ground. The result is a slow but environmentally safe waste disposal method. Septic systems require maintenance. For instance, toilet paper can be used, but some flush-able wipes cannot. Grease, soaps and cooking scraps may also plug up the front baffle or drainfield system.

Here is a picture of what happens when you put grease down the drain.

Save yourself from costly repairs. Do not use powder detergents or pour grease into your septic system

Septic drainfields and an equal sized replacement area should ideally be located in an area that receives little or no surface disturbance. Every local county health district or department has rules which explain horizontal and vertical setbacks allowed between all septic components and buildings, water lines, property lines, wells and even certain species of trees. Usually decks are allowed over drainfields as long as the piers of the deck are at least two feet from the drainfield trenches, and as long as the deck footings do not support a roof. If the deck has a roof the setback is usually ten feet, but always check with your local health department. Here is a picture of a situation of a deck built over a septic tank here in Atlanta, GA.

Save yourself from expensive alterations to your home additions. Always check where your system is located.

A properly designed septic tank system will have a septic tank with sufficient volume to accumulate solids for several years. Over time the solids accumulate and begin to fill up the septic tank. If these solids are not periodically pumped out, suspended solid particles may begin to flow into the absorption field. These solids will eventually clog the absorption field and may require the installation of a new absorption field. Newer septic tank systems are required to have an effluent filter located on the outlet of the septic tank. The purpose of this filter is to protect the absorption field by trapping suspended solids. If the septic tank is not pumped out periodically, the effluent filter may become clogged causing wastewater to back up into the house.

A specific determination of when it’s time to pump a septic tank can be made by having the depth of the solids and level of scum buildup checked periodically. New septic tanks have an access port over the inlet and outlet tees to facilitate the cleaning of the effluent filter and pumping of the tank. Two factors primarily affect the pumping frequency required. The first factor is the holding capacity of the septic tank. The more people using a system, the faster the solids build up, and the more frequently the tank will have to be pumped. A larger capacity system provides better treatment and requires less pumping. The standard three or four bedroom house has a 1000 gallon septic tank. The second factor is the amount of solids in the wastewater. If you have a garbage disposal, you will have to pump out your septic tank more frequently. The use of a garbage disposal may increase the amount of solids in a septic tank by as much as 50%. Pouring grease or other non-biodegradable types of solid waste drown the drain will add to the accumulation of solids. Homes with garbage disposals are required to increase the size of their septic tank by 50%.

A three or four bedroom house with a garbage disposal is required to have a 1500 gallon septic tank. The recommended pumping frequency for pumping out septic tanks can be estimated based on assuming a wastewater retention time of 24 hours and assuming that 50% of the solids are digested by bacterial action in the tank.

If you suspect a running toilet you can conduct a simple dye test to determine if your toilet(s) are actually leaking.
Quite often toilets leak a small amount of water from the tank or reservoir to the bowl. A small leak like this can go undetected for a long time and eventually lead to a septic system failure.

The dye test is simple.
Add at least five drops of food coloring, red or blue are good choices, into the flush tank before you go to bed. If the dye is in the bowl in the morning, the flush flapper is leaking and is need of repair or replacement.

If a leak is detected make the repair promptly.

Follow these steps to make the repair.

Step 1: First check the guide rod or chain on the tank stopper. If the rod is bent or the chain links are twisted, just straighten them.

Step 2: Next check the float mechanism. If lifting the ball up stops the water from running, try to bend the float are down to get the right buoyancy. If you notice that the ball has water in it, it needs to be replaced. Replace is by unscrewing it from the arm and putting a new one in its place.

Step 3: If the toilet is still running, the valve seat and stopper may have corrosion or build-up preventing the stopper from closing. Lift the stopper up and check for any obstructions. Gently scour the seat and the rim. If there is a great deal of damage, replace the stopper and valve seat.

Step 4: The flush valve assembly may have to be replaced if the toilet is still running. Turn the water supply to the toilet off. Remove the assembly and valve. Take the old parts with you when purchasing new inside gaskets and assemble to endure a perfect fit. If the shaft of the assembly is cracked, the whole shaft and assembly will need to be replaced. Again, take all the parts with you to get a perfect match.

If plumbing repairs, no matter how small, are not your idea of fun, call your plumber and have it repaired right a way before you forget about it.

Remember, a leaking or running toilet can cause a septic system failure.

First limit the amount of solids you put down your drains and therefore into your septic tank. Do not flush sanitary napkins, tampons, or cat litter down your toilet, they can easily fill up your septic system. Disposable diapers, paper towels, or dye heavy toilet paper should also not be flushed. Basically you should avoid putting anything in your septic system that does not decompose quickly.

Also avoid putting large amount of foods down your garbage disposal. The occasional vegetable peelings or fruit skins are okay, but consistent use of a garbage disposal will can grow the solids into your septic tank to double the normal amount.

Consider replacing your garbage disposal with as expensive model as you can afford. Often the more expensive the model, the finer it grinds. This greatly impacts the decomposition time in the septic tank.

Avoiding heavy cleaners and noxious chemicals for normal cleaning jobs. Instead, use organic and biodegradable products. Not only are these better for the environment, but they will not kill the bacteria in your septic tank. If you do kill the bacteria in the septic tank, you will have to have the system regularly pumped out and new bacteria introduced.
This rule of thumb should also apply to paint thinners, gasoline, and motor oil, among other things. It is irresponsible to release these things into the environment, take them to a chemical station which can dispose of them as needed.
